A New England FarmHouse

This house and property are a love letter to the land. Woodlands coming down to open pasture and a historic greenhouse, tucked in with stone walls and gardens surrounding her, but with wide open views to drink in the surrounding beauty. There is a stillness here, the bird song blending with the small buzz of insects hard at work in the garden, the way the late evening lights slants through the garden, it is a good place to be

Like so many of our projects this work is developing over time revealing itself season by season in the landscape. I have walked in this garden for two summer now, and look forward to seeing it to grow and take shape over coming ones

Landscape Features:

In the front garden, a herringbone brick walkway takes you from the drive to the front entry, with larger granite steppers through the front garden and down around the other side. The front garden is a cottage garden through and through, a pollinator haven. There is a retaining wall creating part of the garden, allowing the grade to come down more slowly. Along the front the old farm was re-stacked and flows into the exposed ledge.

Another brick walk takes you to the side door with granite steps leading up. The cottage garden planting scheme continues, connecting the spaces. Granite steppers take you from the walk, though the garden and to the staircase, leading down to the back patio.

A large, curving reclaimed granite wall creates the level change in this garden, the staircase runs parallel to it, with lighting cut into the wall. The two side wall creating the staircase hides the stairs from the lower patio. Separating the patio from the field is a low seat height wall with lighting built in, creating both a place to sit and enjoy to view and a visual break. Eventually garden beds below the wall will be planted and wrap around the other side of the house, surrounding the patio and granite plank walkway.
