A Gardener’s Eclectic Garden

This house and garden is a conversation. Down the road from an old quarry, this house was one of the early ones on this hill, overlooking the sea, and for generations people have made use of the granite and tended the gardens. I think it has always been a gardener’s garden, the evidence is everywhere. The current owners bring their own love of gardening and their love of making, art, sculpture and metalworking into the narrative, blending the history of the place with their own unique voices and personal touches, it is one of those garden you love to be in, it is very personal.

This is property is an ongoing build process, we have worked with our client over several years to execute their design, and much of the work is still in process, as a result we get to see this property develop over time, that ongoing relationship, with both the land and the people, create deep sense of connection.

Landscape Features:

In the front garden a “new” walkway was set, connecting the granite stairs to the old front walk, utilizing recycled bricks and reclaimed granite matching the style of original front walk.

The back garden is where the majority of the work has been focused. The first push was to create the potager garden, with a mix of raised beds and in ground planting beds as well as space for siting and potted plants. A stone wall hugs this space carving it out of the slope. Stone steps through the wall bring you up to the patio, as well as a side gate leading to the lower lawn. The client created the hairpin metal fences and gates himself.

Above the potager is a granite patio. Two large slabs of granite form the heart of the patio, with smaller irregular pieces flowing out and around it to create a larger space. A large stone bench was notched and set on the edge of the patio.
